LOOK OUT FOR THIS YEARS DERBYSHIRE BEER FESTIVAL IN AUGUST
Brian and Winnie welcome you to the Kings Head public house in the charming Derbyshire village of Bonsall, with Cromford and Matlock being a mere stones throw away.
Diamond-leaded windows, thick weathered stone mullions and the mellowed stone stucture is the cosy and homely King's Head and indicate the pub's great age.
Local word says that it was opened on the day King Charles I was executed in January 1649, although a more reliable date is the 1677 included in the structure.
Inside are the Yeomans Bar and the Kings Lounge, both full of atmosphere. Expect darkwood panelling, glowing wood-burning stoves in the winter, old benches and pews, a wealth of porcelaine and china and scrubbed tables topped with candles. Don't forget tip-top ales from Bateman's Brewery Wainfleet.
The pub stands in the tiny market square next to the remarkable stepped Market Cross.
GREAT FOOD Look to the menu for steak and kidney pudding and other traditional dishes, parsnip and sweet potato bake and vegetarian sausage also curries and a choice of fish dishes. There is also an excellent range of steaks cooked to your liking and a massive mixed grill. The chalk board features a variety of daily specials. Don't forget that we also do the Traditional Sunday Roast.
FAMILIES WELCOME Children can choose from their own 'kids menu' and you could even eat 'al fresco' in our sheltered courtyard area. Sorry but no children in the pub after 9pm.
IN THE LOCAL AREA The small village of Bonsall is situated at the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, on the edge of the Peak District National Park, approx 4 miles from Matlock and Matlock Bath and just up the hill from Cromford. Bonsall is in the Domesday Book, with its history dating back to Roman times. This is a former lead mining and textile producing village which is renowned for the cross outside the pub and the beautiful views. The nearby county town of Matlock provides an array of shops and at the heart of the town, Hall Leys Park offers boating and there is also a children's play area. Discover The Heights of Abraham by cable car, the shops at Arkwright's Cromford Mill, or spend an exhilarating day out at the magnificent childrens theme park of Gulliver's Kingdom. With the historic market town of Bakewell, Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House and Park within easy touring distance, there's plenty to see and do.

More of the pubs history, The first innkeeper, John Abell carved his name on a wooden beam when his first son was born all those years ago. This beam can still be found just inside the entrance to the pub.
John Abell was the first of many generations of Abells to be landlords of the Kings Head. It has been owned by a number of breweries - Strettons (taken over 1927), Ind Coope, Allsop and Ansells (in the 1980s). The pub was then acquired by Bateman's Brewery in 1999.
